Do Pi's tend to reach maturity sooner than other parrots?
Mine has been doing a little wheezy dance for my hands lately, and just recently started being an absolute angry biting machine...Macu's only like 2 years old and I'm figuring this is the beginning of the "hormones" phase. To add to the mix, Zouma my little lovebird seems to be feeding of the Mac-inator and getting all bitchy too.
Any good advice on how to keep me from getting bit would be nice. So far she seems to do it totally unprovoked...just sitting there, then *bam* biting you!

Re: Pi- you'll be a woman sooon....
Thu, December 13, 2007 - 5:42 PMWow! I wonder why. Is she this way with just you or everyone? Because my first pi, Rockefeller, a male, grew to absolutely hate me and dumped me for my ex-BF, with whom he was hopelessly in love. Is she playing favorites?
Otherwise... you're pretty good at weeding out reasons. Sleep? Light? Diet? Sometimes they are more aggressive if they have too much protein vs. carbs.
Or maybe she's just a terrible two. What do you do when she bites you?
Does she do the Evil Death Grip, where you have to shake her off your body, or is it a quick strike-and-release? Is anyone or anything "threatening" you when she does it? Is it at a certian time of day, before or after a specific activity? Is she cage-territorial or is this when she's out? Defensive of a toy?
Aw, damn. I know there was another question... I'll ask more later. You have your work cut out with this set. :) -

Re: Pi- you'll be a woman sooon....
Fri, December 14, 2007 - 8:08 AMYeah, this just cropped up in the last day or two. She was on top of my laptop (a neutral place) and started "ramping up" with excitement and then asked me for noogies (all this is fairly normal). Normally when birds get all excited I am super cautious, but Macu has done this many times before and been fine.
I went to give her her scritches and she struck. At first a hard quick release then when I went to pull away, long and crushing bite (yay blood!). It was just me in the room, she is not a big fan of Sean loving on her as much as I do, but she tolerates him. After the bite, she went directly to her cage with cover on and me telling her "Bad Parrot" in a low voice so that she knew it was a different tonality. I let her sulk there for an hour, and went back to check on her - the minute I got even close to the cage her hackles went up, all the while her calling to me in her sweet voice like she wanted out....weird huh? When Sean came over, she acted normal to him, didn't raise her hackles when he went near the cage, but to play it safe we waited a bit before a second attempt to see if she was out of her mood.
Her diet's the same, still getting plenty light and exercize etc. I tried the second time to get her to step up on a stick to see if she would accept that and she freaked out and ran to the back of the cage, then flew out of the cage and promptly hit the window with her face. If felt so bad that I couldn't just let her hop up on my hand, so toweled her and put her back for the rest of the evening.
To say the least, even though I know better it kinda hurt my feelings she was being such a Grouchy Groucherton.
I just noticed her eye skin is a little more coral pink colored - any sign that she's reaching maturity? -

Re: Pi- you'll be a woman sooon....
Fri, December 14, 2007 - 4:37 PMCould be. I thought 5 years was the age, but maybe yours is an early bloomer. The only Angry Pi I've had was male, and he was older than that when it happened with him. Also, first bird, so I'm sure I did plenty wrong... -

Re: Pi- you'll be a woman sooon....
Sat, January 26, 2008 - 7:39 PMI talked to my vet today and he said that 2 is actually a possible age for her to be all woman-y....he also said she's gained a little weight and thinks that if she's hormonal than this may be the reason for weight gain.... so even bridies have to deal with feeling all bloaty - no wonder they can be so bitchy! -
