NEW BABY WHITE CAP PIONUS

topic posted Tue, June 3, 2008 - 4:15 AM by  ROSE
I was thinking of a companion for my 4 year old Maximillian Pionus and thought a baby White Cap would be a good choice. The baby is still being hand fed and so won't be ready to take home until the end of July. I am wondering the best way to introduce the two. They will have thier own cages in the aviary, but my Maxi is never in his cage except to sleep at night.

I introduce my birds from across the room at first, in their separate cages, with a towel or something draped over part of each cage in order to allow hiding from the "evil eye" if it happens. My pi is very territorial and likes to pose and huff. If yours does too, this could be very intimidating to a baby.

I'd give them lots of time to see each other and get accustomed before you let them near one another. And don't give one bird a lot more attention than the other.

      That's my preliminary advice.

Hey Rose, are you making sure your babies are caged when you leave the house? Lately, I have seen an alarming number of birds injured when they were unattended. Most recently there was a mouse trap to the toe (a mouse thrap that was secreted behind a couch and mommy didn't think the bird would go back there), and a while back a friend of mine got home to find the resident amazon with a partly missing upper mandible. He never figured out what the bird did to cause this, but man, that would be sickening.

I know my pi loves to explore weird places and I would never trust her out alone. Some people may say, "Oh, but my bird never does that, even over the past few years," but one thing Juni is sure to do is change her favorite things, compulsions, fears, every once in a while. One minute this cabinet will be The Monster From Hell, then a week later she inexplicably loves to go under and behind it.

Anyway, you know me. Always the Chicken little. The sky is falling!
