(I'm going to cross-post this on Owned by as well)
I'm in a hurry, so I'll skip the details for now.
Jill and I ran into a great deal on a Blue Headed Pionus pair (they've succesfully bred together) complete with the cage and everything else thrown in. We went and met them and spent time, and decided it was a good idea. We haven't named them yet, but time will take care of that. The girl (we think) is very tame and friendly, the boy (again, we *think* ) is mostly tame, but still a bit shy about hands next to his feet. though he'll let you reach right in and head-scratch and the like. OK, so no real problems there, we know how to work with that and get him more comfortable and everything.
The problem is that Little Girl (just a place-holder name) really likes me. ALOT.
They haven't been in the house 24 hours yet and she's just fallen head-over for me, instantly. Everywhere I go in the house she tries to follow. If she's on her cage, she's on the side and level that's closest to me. She's ignoring her handsome boy. True, he doesn't seem bothered by it so far, but I'm not sure what to do. If this was a single parrot, I'd be delighted, but I don't want her to ignore her boy. She's friendly and accepting of everyone else in the house too, so that's really great as well, but I'm worried that she's dumped her boy for me.

Re: New birds, insta-problem
Tue, May 6, 2008 - 10:21 PMWow- I dunno about that one. I'd say that there's really no way that you can "make" a parrot like her s/o (like Boo and Zouma). Come to think of it I don't think there's anything you can make a parrot do! :)
Perhaps limit your time with the girl and lavish attention on the boy? Not sure about that one. Best of luck with the new family! -

Re: New birds, insta-problem
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 9:00 AMWell things have changed a little since this initial post. Now they're both coming out, though he does so much less than her. Turns out he was just shy and slow about accepting stepping up. The very next morning *he* was first out of the cage and stepped right up onto a hand. He does seem a bit less sure on his feet though. Not sure if he's younger or just being *really* cautious.
She is definitly the dominant of the two. She'll chase him around occasionally. She definatly likes me. Wherever she is, she tries to get closer, though, fortunatly, he doesn't seem upset by this. Even when he's with me, he doesn't take the opportunity to beat up his "rival", he just makes soft sounds and asks for noogs. He was first out and onto the floor to come to me this morning as well. Figured out how to climb his way up my chair right quick too. -

Re: New birds, insta-problem
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 7:43 PMWell, they're settling fairly well. Getting into routines...which means Shackles chases Zissou once in the morning, once around Four 0'clock, and then one more time 1/2 an hour before bed-time.
Definite personalities are becoming clearer. Shackles is the bubblegum chewing Head Cheerleader, and Zissou is on the Chess Team. He's quieter, less assertive, but there's definitly more going on behind those eyes. Shackles is a tramp.
What neither of them has figured out yet is that it's OK to leave the cage and come over to us, or to leave us and go back to the cage whenever they want...the ladder is a mysterious and possibly devil-spawned device, and God obviously created us monkeys to decide where the birds will be at a given moment.
They both tolerate the cat fairly well, Zissou even gave her what-for on one occasion.
Neither of them has dared to take a running-water bath, or shower yet, but they both like the spritzer. Zissou is even MORE delighted by water than Macu (at least last time I saw her take a bath) I've watched him go so far upside down that it was easier for him to just complete the circle.
and they've just discovered that their treat/fruit dish contains........fruit, veggies and treats! Who knew?! -

Re: New birds, insta-problem
Wed, June 4, 2008 - 11:47 AMNeat!
My BW pi, Junior, is like "AFRAIDAFRAIDAFRAIDAFRAID oh hey this is kinda cool I think I'll chew on it!"
It's weird how she suddenly switches gears, and sometimes after a LONG period of fearful stubbornness. -

Mon, June 9, 2008 - 7:29 PMSo I've got to ask, where does the name Shackles come from? Also glad to hear that all's going well with them!
