The baby is still being hand fed and so won't be ready to take home until the end of July. I am wondering the best way to introduce the two. They will have thier own cages in the aviary, but my Maxi is never in his cage except to sleep at night.

I'm in a hurry, so I'll skip the details for now.

Jill and I ran into a great deal on a Blue Headed Pionus pair (they've succesfully bred together) complete with the cage and everything else thrown in. We went and met them and spent time, and decided it was a good idea. We haven't named them yet, but time will take care of that. The girl (we think) is very tame and friendly, the boy (again, we *think* ) is mostly tame, but still a bit shy about hands next to his feet. though he'll let you reach right in and head-scratch and the like. OK, so no real problems there, we know how to work with that and get him more comfortable and everything.

The problem is that Little Girl (just a place-holder name) really likes me. ALOT.

They haven't been in the house 24 hours yet and she's just fallen head-over for me, instantly. Everywhere I go in the house she tries to follow. If she's on her cage, she's on the side and level that's closest to me. She's ignoring her handsome boy. True, he doesn't seem bothered by it so far, but I'm not sure what to do. If this was a single parrot, I'd be delighted, but I don't want her to ignore her boy. She's friendly and accepting of everyone else in the house too, so that's really great as well, but I'm worried that she's dumped her boy for me.

There I was just having fixed myself a tasty spinach salad. Macu was resting at the end of the window on the sill she prefers which is like 5 feet away from me.
The minute she saw my salad placed on the table she ran like gang busters, and little toes a tapping on the wood of the windowsil to get to the salad.
I was laughing so hard - normally she never does this, very little attracts her attention so much, except for peanuts.
Then she did something I've never seen her do: she stuck her cute little pi face directly into my salad bowl and plucked out a spinch leaf to happily abscond off with and eat with sneaky pleasure. Thankfully it was one that wasn't covered in dressing, but what the heck?
I've never seen her react this way to food.
The only reason I could think of was that the bird store must have offered fresh greens to their birds, which is great...so from now on, she's a little popeye girl.
As far as I know spinach is ok for pis - right?

Well, apparently they've observed the parrots going crazy over this particular tree - nicknameed the "Ice Cream Bean" tree as it's fruit tastes of vanilla ice cream!
This sounds too good to be true! Has anyone ever seen these trees, tasted the fruit, etc.? If Pi's love it, I'm tempted to purchase some seedlings and try my hand at gardening.

Either way I don't have a lot of experience working with them and wanted to know if there were any tried and true games/socalization tricks that I can use which will catch Macu's attention and build trust between us. I also have yet to find sounds that interest her, the kissy noises, clicks, trills and other vocalizations that work really well for the small lovebirds don't interest her too much.
Previous to this I have had lovebirds, who are pretty uppity with a lot of attitude and basically have no problem running up to you for love, but Macu is a little different, she only comes over if I'm not looking at her, etc.
Of course I want to give her belly scratches and love the daylights out of her, but that I completely understand takes time & trust.
So any tecniques or games or even sounds (apart from car alarm sounds or blue jays) would be great advice.
Thanks!

So today I pulled a really stupid thing and left Junior's cage open. We have two cats who look at her like lunch, but she's not having any of it. She has no fear. Don't worry, nothing happened (knocking on wood).

Anyway, the roommate got home first. He is a big, mean-looking bald man, probably close to 300 pounds, and he's terrified of my bronze-wing. He called me and told me I needed to get home because he couldn't get her off the amazon's cage. She was holding fast right there. Sometimes she'll fly to one of her perches in my room and he'll shut her in, but she wouldn't move, and he was not resourceful enough to get her to go anywhere.

She picks on him. She threatens him. She relishes the fact that he's fully intimidated by her. She has landed on his neck and chomped down on two occasions, once on his ear.

This bird would never, ever, ever bite me in anger. She's my little baby and is the sweetest thing to me, but she has him exactly where she wants him and he's too scared to do anything to remedy the situation, so I have to keep them apart by caging her, putting her in my room, or policing when they're in the same room. It doesn't help that when she's being friendly he is rude and unaccepting, and that he calls her all kinds of names and says he hates her. I'm sure she gets the jist of the sentiment.

Anyone else have this?

Last time I saw this kind of ire, it was my first pi, a white-cap, who broke up with me and moved out with the ex-boyfriend. Don't think I don't know how if feels!

I stopped and said hi to him and gushed over the bird. I wanted to interact with the parrot but he was nervous being out in the street and being approached by a stranger. I walked away to leave Dave to his musical setup. :)

This gathering will take place on Saturday, January 21, 2006 -- insuring that all participants have fully recovered from the holidays. We're going to need a place to hold this gathering, so please speak up if you know of a place big enough to hold all of us. We're thinking residential, in San Francisco or close by.
My first pi, Rockefeller (male white-cap), said a bunch of things. He made a shooting sound when we pointed at things, called us fuckers, said his name, was generally a very vocal bird, in that quiet pionus way.

The second, Wookiee (female bronze-wing), said "hello" and "up" as well as "Wook!"
Topaz, the female blue-head I'm bird-sitting, chuckles softly when we laugh.

Of course, each pionus has its own shriek, amazingly loud for their mellow nature. Junior sounds like a fire alarm.

i am seriously considering getting a pionus. i rent and have roommies in san francisco so their quiet nature appeals to me. i don't know pionus' character very well. (i had cockatiels in the past. i came to sf temporarily from hawaii and my mom took care of them. when i decided to stay here permanently, my mom had completely become cleo and spikey's person). do you think a pionus wuold enjoy being a passenger on a bicycle? I'd keep his feathers clipped at all times and he'd be in a travel cage of some kind, probably on my body like a birdie back/yummy pack. my cockatiels loved riding in my bike basket in their travel cage.

also, where, near san francisco can i find a breeder of pionus? the pet store on 24th and Douglas has 3 right now, but at $800 each, i was hoping to find a breeder with more affordable prices.

I was helping Polly move once, and Murphy was out on top of the cage. Neither of us let her out(that's another story *entirely*). At that time Murhpy and I had not grown close, and though I really liked her she often regarded me with a disdainful eye.

As the shifting of items went on, some large things were moved past Murphy's cage. She became quite agitated and was periodically on patrol. She moved out on to the top of her cage door and "gacked" a couple of times to express her displeasure at the whole operation.

As I was walking past her door, she suddenly decided that I *must* be to blame for all the turmoil in her world. And she had had enough. And like most who have decided they've had enough, she wanted more. Of me.

She leaped from the cage door to my shoulder. And she commenced to use her sharp pionus beak on my right ear.

I knew she was terrified, and I was afraid I'd hurt her if I tried to grab her off my shoulder. I decided in an instant that I was just going to stand there and take it until Polly could get a towel to grab her with.

Bite. Flap. "Gack!" Paul stands still.
Bite. Flap. "Gack!" Paul stands still. Paul begins to bleed.
Bite. Flap. "Gack!" Paul stands still. Paul bleeds.
Bite. Flap. "Gack!" Paul starts to move slowly, and continues bleeding.
Bite. Flap. "Gack!" Paul moves so Polly can grab Murphy with towel. Paul bleeds on the towel.

I stood there while Murphy bit all the way through my right ear lobe three times, almost through once more, and then almost all the way through the cartilage just in front of the ear canal.

The pain was... inspirational... to say the least.

By the time the third bite was over, I was really looking forward to getting her off my shoulder. I actually had to walk to a place where Polly could get her while the last two bites were happening. Polly pulled her off during the fifth bite... I have no doubt that Murphy's beak would have gone all the way through the cartilage if she had been able to stay there.

The cutest thing was, when Polly was holding Murphy in the towel, she stopped struggling immediately, and gave out a loud "happy" whistle, as if to say "Look Mom! I got him! I got him good!" And I really do mean it was cute... I was actually laughing while verifying my ear was still attached. It was... *very bloody* but still attached.

I wasn't angry, and I didn't hold it against her... she was just tired of all the hullabaloo and wanted to express that. I just happened to be in the right place at the wrong time. And while she was biting me, I was more worried about the fact that the front door was open than what was happening to my ear. It hurt, but she wasn't to blame.

Since then, Murphy and I have become great friends. I cook special meals for her, bring her (mom approved) treats, and provide entertainment by working on my laptop by her cage. She even comes to visit me when Polly goes out of town for an extended period. We call it "summer camp". :)

BTW... there may be those who are thinking having a pionus bite your ear is like getting a piercing. It isn't.

The beak is wide and sharp in some places but dull in others and all of it is being forced through your ear with great strength. Also, she's not just punching through. Once her beak is in you, she shakes her head from side to side while pulling and flapping her wings. So it hurts like hell. I have piercings in one ear, and large tattoo that's partially over bone... and I think I'd rather get the inside of my elbow tattooed than let her bite my ear again. :)

Anyway, I love her dearly. She's a love. And now that we are good friends, it's just a funny story. :)

That's what I call it, but I'm sure it's really a territorial display...she stalks slowly and menacingly around on top of her cage, with her tail spread out, her neck feathers bristling, her beak open. Anybody else have Pionus on patrol?

Hi Pi People,

This board has received a lot more activity lately and I wanted to say HI to you new people. Take a moment to hit that intro thread - tell us about you and your pi! Show some photos. I dunno.

I apologize for my own response. I don't "get to" Tribe very often - it's so time consuming that I rarely have time for it. But I'll do my best to stop by now and then.

I do live in the Bay Area and I did have Pi Phests, but haven't had time to organize one in quite some time. Usually we do that on the Pionus Info list I also moderate, at Yahoo Groups - there are a few other Bay Area pi kids on that list and if you're interested in a subject-only list which is pretty low volume, stop by and say howdy there too. It comes to my inbox so I check it more frequently. (sheepish grin)

Anyway - please carry on. I'd love to learn more about other Pi in the Bay Area!

I have a bronze-wing (Junior, 8, F) and a yellow-naped amazon (Pepper, 15, M). The thing is, Junior, who is at best two-thirds Pepper's size, runs the roost. She chases him around regularly and beats his butt. He kinda deserves it because he's a bit of a punk.

Anyway, I'm watching my friend's blue-head (Topaz, 5, F) for a few more days and Topaz ain't having any of it! Junior goes after her and Topaz stands her ground. They just pop their beaks together for a couple minutes till I decide they've done enough pecking-order-establishing and I chase Junior off.

Pepper, of course, is afraid of both of them. He gets beat up by girls. Hee!

okay, so max (he came with the name) is a 7.5-year old maxi pi. i can never learn enough about him; he is a mystery.

currently: he shares his home with bebe the 5.5-year old amazon. he is in love with her (but she loves jim--;]) but also tortures her. he chases her and bites at her. at feeding time he chases her away from the food so he can eat first; then he regurgitates his meal *for* her.

he cries when she's away from him.

he masturbates (loudly) every morning between 7 and 7:30.

he's pretty aggressive and territorial. he loves me but only cares for my attention/approaching about 20% of the time.

i refer to him as the existentialist bird, because he pretty much just sits around and ponders his condition. he does not talk, and his vocalizations are very quiet.

he's grumpy. he's adorable. he's loved very much.

pics of him and his beautiful companion/sister can be found in my photo album on my profile.
